We like to stay very active on our cruises. It's my personal way to avoid feeling too guilty for that fourth trip to the buffet or soft-serve ice cream station each day.
Several lines offer an wide array of active excursions. Many ships also have tons to do to help you keep on moving while you're onboard.
Many Royal Caribbean ships, for example, include rock climbing walls, ice skating rinks and FlowRider surf simulators (see video below). Royal's upcoming Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas also will offer a skydiving simulator and bumper cars.
Norwegian Cruise Line's Breakaway and Getaway ships contain a fun ropes course, complete with ziplines.
On Carnival Cruise ships, you can find the fastest water slides at sea, as well as a range of other active attractions.
Virtually every ship at sea also features a fitness center, complete with spin, kickboxing and yoga classes, loads of free weights and other amenities designed to keep you ship shape.
Other tricks we use when we cruise: Take the steps. We aim to avoid the elevators at all costs in an effort to keep active. This often is more easily done early in the cruise and early in the day when you are freshest. But it can pay off to help burn a few extra calories and keep those legs strong. Then, you feel like you've earned that extra dessert each night at dinner!
