About In The Loop

This website grew out of my passion for experiencing the world. I'm a long-time newspaper veteran and travel writer and a strong travel advocate. I'm on the hunt for wonderful destinations, often those that can be reached by cruise ships. The goal: giving In The Loop readers, the best reviews, tips and tricks to help them have a fantastic, active vacation at affordable prices.

What We're All About

You know that feeling you get at the end of an especially great day? You're exhausted, but so satisfied, knowing you have wrung every last bit out of that sucker. Well, that's the feeling I am striving for every day when I travel. And I want to travel and explore as much as possible. Life is too short to not be constantly on the move trying to see all this world has to offer. From the people, places and all the active adventures.

Well, you’ve come to the right place. Over the past decade plus, I’ve been enjoying cruises and other active travel experiences. I’m John, a 50-plus-year-old married dude with no kids. My wife, Colleen, and I are into vacations that keep us moving -- think whitewater rafting, hiking, snorkeling, ziplining -- with a good dose of great food, beach time and beers, too.

This website is where I share what I've learned from experts, personal experiences and other travelers -- like you -- in an effort to help you find hidden travel gems. I'm talking about giving you off-the-beaten-path spots or a new way to look at your traditional vacations.

Veteran Journalist

My journey into writing started with the good old-fashioned newspaper. During my career, which spanned 15 years, I had a hand at nearly everything at daily papers in New York, Colorado and Virginia. Along the way, I wrote about Syracuse hall of fame basketball coach Jim Boeheim's 600th win and the Broncos in the post-John Elway era. My work has appeared in numerous publications, including AARP The Magazine, the Washington Times, The Virginian-Pilot, World of Cruising, Cruise Travel, Travel Pulse, TravelAge West, Cruise Business Review, Independent Traveler and Cruise Critic. Now, I write about my travel adventures, which encompass my passion to find the tips, tricks and deals to help you also enjoy fantastic journeys.

Travel Enthusiast

Growing up, I enjoyed a few road trips and camping outings with my family. However, other than a weekend jaunt across the border to Niagara Falls or Toronto from my home in Rochester, N.Y., I did not leave the United States until I was nearly 30. My first cruise with my future wife opened my eyes to all that is out there in the wider world: the cultures, sites and beauty of it all. Now, I'm in a race to see as much as I can. My aim with this blog and my overall social media efforts is to help tell the stories of the people and destinations in the world so that more travelers can smartly experience their great adventures.

Work with Me

While I'm out seeing the world, I'll be gathering great stories and images. I can give voice to the stories and adventures you want to bring to your prospective customers and guests. I specialize in reviews of resorts and hotels, as well as Caribbean and Mediterranean cruise ports and the ships that sail there. I'll also be writing stories and taking pictures of river ships, medieval villages and the people who live in and visit Europe's wine valleys. All that and much, much more. Let's talk about how we can work together to get the word out about your active travel destination or brand.

Photographer

One of the things I love most about traveling is seeing the world through my camera. I look to capture moments that offer a glimpse into real life on the road as well as the excitement available for visitors to great destinations around the globe.
