You Can Paddle Canoes to Reach Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau

Mendenhall Lake canoe paddle to Mendenhall Glacier
We set out to paddle on Mendenhall Lake to reach the glacier. The rains came as soon as we boarded the canoes.
Day 9
Juneau
Highlight: Rains and winds visited us throughout the day as we took part in what was a more mentally challenging day than many had hoped for. We chose the canoe excursion that had us paddling on Mendenhall Lake to see the glacier. It was not too bad, but the other 10 people in our canoe were definitely not having fun in the mid-40 temps as misty rains persisted through most of the adventure. Colleen and I did our part as best we could with the paddling, and the glacier was interesting to see from the water. We had visited Mendenhall Glacier and nearby Nuggets Falls on a previous cruise but had done so via the path you can walk from the visitors' center.
What else: We returned to the ship to take a hot shower and warm up. A good hot meal and afternoon nap was restorative. We enjoyed the rest of the day onboard, relaxing, playing a little backgammon and drinking beers. I can’t specifically remember drinking the beers, but I am sure that we drank beers and ate too much at dinner (because that also became a nightly pattern).

A Glorious Day of Biking and Hiking in Skagway, Alaska

View from Lower Dewey trail in Skagway, Alaska
This was just one of the cool views we got on Dewey Lake Trail in Skagway. That's our ship down there.
Day 8
Skagway, Alaska
Highlight: This was the sunniest day yet on the 10-day voyage, and we took advantage with a day of hiking and biking. We chose the 5-mile biking tour with Sockeye Cycle, which took us through the rainforest and along parts of the Chilkoot Trail. In the afternoon, Colleen and I found the easy-to-access Dewey Lake Trail (located behind the Avis and past the railroad tracks).
We spent two hours on the Lower Dewey Lake Trail and found several spectacular vistas as we went past the reservoir and patches of ice still melting in the mountainside.
What else: After another fun day of physical activity in the fresh air, we sought out Skagway Brewing Co., which we had discovered years ago. It was great to be reunited with this fab hangout where we first learned about spruce-tip beer.

Brown Bear Watching in Icy Strait Point and Hoonah, Alaska

Regent Seven Seas Mariner in Icy Strait Point.
Icy Strait Point is a quiet and scenic small village. We enjoyed our visit ashore here.
Bears in Hoonah, AlasksWe saw four bears, including this mom and two cubs. These animals were seen from our perch on a viewing platform.
Day 7
Hoonah, Alaska
Highlight: We had the first diversion from our original itinerary, meaning we couldn't get to Hubbard Glacier. Instead, we anchored at Icy Strait Point and spent the day in Hoonah. This tiny port town is home to 760 residents, and we were the first cruise of the season for them. This is also where you go to see coastal brown bears. We went on a nature walk and were able to see four of them in the wild at a safe distance from our viewing platforms.
What else: We spent a little time wandering around the old buildings that housed the former canneries in the old fishing village but now are a complex of restaurants, shops and a museum. We had our first Alaskan Brewing Co. beers, Alaskan Amber, before tendering back to the ship for a quiet night of dinner at Compass Rose main dining room and a movie in our suite before passing out for a good night's sleep.
