Hoonah, Alaska
Highlight: We had the first diversion from our original itinerary, meaning we couldn't get to Hubbard Glacier. Instead, we anchored at Icy Strait Point and spent the day in Hoonah. This tiny port town is home to 760 residents, and we were the first cruise of the season for them. This is also where you go to see coastal brown bears. We went on a nature walk and were able to see four of them in the wild at a safe distance from our viewing platforms.
What else: We spent a little time wandering around the old buildings that housed the former canneries in the old fishing village but now are a complex of restaurants, shops and a museum. We had our first Alaskan Brewing Co. beers, Alaskan Amber, before tendering back to the ship for a quiet night of dinner at Compass Rose main dining room and a movie in our suite before passing out for a good night's sleep.
