During my many trips to Mexico, I have learned important lessons about the versatility of beer.
Yes, cerveza is not just for slamming house-party style in a bid to get wasted. Though, that has not deterred many people we have seen down here from making that the sole purpose of their precious brews. Woo! Hoo!
Been there, done that -- more than a few times. No. no. no. Not on this trip.
We also find that beer in Cancun:
Is cheaper than water: We figured it makes perfect economic sense to cool down and stay hydrated during a day in the sun with great-tasting Mexican beers like Leon, Montejo, Pacifico, Modelo and Bohemia. Stop at a local store and get a bottle of beer for about 12 pesos ($1). A bottle of water costs a little more than that. In Mexico they say proudly: "Save the water, drink a beer."
Will probably not even get you drunk: Drinking at a regular clip all day, the heat and humidity on Cancun in September and October send that beer right through your system so quickly, you can enjoy the refreshing flavor without worrying about a terrible hangover or becoming falling-down drunk. You won't even have to run to the bathroom all day while imbibing.
Is a great way to meet new friends: From bar and restaurant staff to fellow travelers who have stopped in for a beer, when you pull up a seat and order a cold one, you have a perfect chance to ask how everyone is doing, where they are from, how they spent their day, etc. We've met cool people from all over the world this way and picked up great tips on places to eat and excursions to try.
Salud! Drink up -- for your health, happiness and enlightenment.
Always travel happy!
