Scenic Cruises Redesigns 'Space Ships' to Offer More Luxury

Scenic Cruises Scenic Ruby river cruise ship
Scenic Ruby and its sister Space Ships all have undergone refurbishments designed to improve the overall luxury cruise experience.
By John Roberts
Scenic Cruises recently completed the redesign of eight of its European "Space Ships", which sail on the Rhine, Main and Danube Rivers. Scenic's two France-based ships were similarly redesigned a couple years ago.

The transformations for the European ships over the past winter reduced the number of cabins and passenger capacity. Scenic Ruby and Scenic Pearl now offer 80 cabins and sail with up to 159 passengers, and Scenic Jasper, Scenic Opal, Scenic Amber, Scenic Crystal, Scenic Jade and Scenic Jewel are now outfitted with 82 staterooms for 163 passengers. This ships also added four more crew members in an effort to give more for personal service during your cruise.

Accommodations and amenities include a new 520-square-foot Royal Owners Suite and larger wellness facilities -- gym, massage services, hair dresser and Salt Therapy lounge. Scenic also installed refillable water-bottle stations on each ship. This means cruisers can use reusable bottles and cut down on wasteful and environmentally harmful single-use bottles.

We love the enhancements to Scenic's wellness offerings, with yoga and stretching classes and more active excursions like bike tours (the ship's carry e-bikes) and hiking outings.
When you're done with your active adventures, Scenic's complimentary three-station Salt Therapy lounge offers 45-minute treatments to help you feel energized and rejuvenated. The humidity and temperature-controlled room is handcrafted from salt bricks and creates a micro-climate of a natural salt mine. It features three inclined lounging chairs that are separated by curtains for privacy. During the treatment, low-level lighting and calming music promotes the natural relaxing effects of the salt.

The negatively charged salt ions hold kinetic energy and offer the same refreshing feeling that you get from time at a beach. The ions also increase the efficacy of healing, improve respiration and skin conditions and boost the immune system.

The new Royal Owner's Suite offers walk-in closets and a separate bathtub and shower in an oversized bathroom, as well as a private bedroom and a large living room. The walk-out balcony allows passengers who book this spacious stateroom to take in the beauty of the landscapes while enjoying butler-delivered drinks and meals.

Scenic's voyages are all-inclusive luxury experiences -- from private butler service and unlimited complimentary beverages and spirits including mini-bar re-stocked daily to full-size private balcony staterooms. The balconies are designed using the innovative Sun Lounge technology -- where the walkout open-air balcony can convert to an all-weather lounge with a push of a button, expanding the living area of the stateroom.

I have sailed twice with Scenic and have been impressed with the beauty and spaciousness of the ships. And I especially like the way this line offers the chance to enjoy a mix of adventure and luxury, because there's nothing wrong with savoring some of the finer comforts in life alongside your active pursuits.
