Passion Island Beach Day in Cozumel, Mexico

Passion Island in Cozumel, Mexico

Passion Island is a 100 percent touristy beach spot in Cozumel. That doesn't mean you won't have a nice time there if you decide you just want a relaxing beach day. It's a perfect spot to check out if you love water sports, swimming, beer, sunshine and relaxing.

I thought that might get your attention.

We were fortunate enough to be hosted on an excursion to the island during a four-day Carnival Cruise sailing on the line's Ecstasy ship. Prices are $69.99 for adults and $54.99 for kids. It took about 45 minutes by ferry in a large "catamaran" to get to the island. Seats are available on an open deck above or down below.

Here's a look at what you can expect if you book a day at Passion Island. (Be sure to check out my video below.)

What You'll Like

The activities -- Once you hit the beach after your ferry ride, the day is yours to enjoy it how you want. Take a stroll away from the main area, and you'll soon feel like the island is all your own to explore. Jump in for a swim or rent snorkel gear. Try a kayak or stand-up paddle board.

You'll find cozy hammocks that dip into the waters. A few minutes swaying, and you've got a real sense of bliss. Get active! Jump on the trampoline or climb the "hill" structure and slide down into the water.

How about sand soccer or volleyball?

There are tons of loungers, seats and tables so you can set up in the sun or shade to enjoy your day.

All you can eat and drink -- The buffet is open the whole time you're at the island. Chicken, fish, spaghetti and more are available. Dig into fruits, salad, chips and salsa with delicious guacamole. There are two bar areas that were always busy. Beers and cocktails were flowing, and people were enjoying the party atmosphere. Sodas and water also are available.

Massages and shopping -- Vendors are set up nearby and offer massages and crafts and such for sale. You might get approached once or twice by someone who simply wants to ask whether you would like a sample massage. If it's not for you, just say no and you won't be hassled. The people on the island were all very friendly.

Service -- They are working for tips (you can hand them out at the end of your day if you are satisfied), and the staffers are very friendly and efficient in their willingness to get your drinks from the bar if you want.

What You Won't Like

Time moves fast -- You get three hours on the island before you are herded back to the ferry. The day is regimented. You must line up and take instruction after you and your fellow ferry passengers gather on the island and again before you leave. The staffers are very specific about this and stick to their procedures. They even insist that you get your picture taken (available for purchase) as you file onto the property. This is viewed as an unnecessary hassle by veteran adult travelers.

Bugs -- Beware of sitting in shaded areas near the trees all afternoon. I got bit up all over the place by no-see-ums. As I write this, most of the bug bites are just starting to fade.

A visit to Passion Island fits the bill just fine for a beach day. We had a good time and found a way to relax and take part in a little bit of everything.

Skipping the Tequila to See Cozumel Through Clear Eyes

Cozumel has been my most frequent port stop when on a cruise. I calculate I've been there four times -- and the first three daylong visits have ended with my party staggering back to the ship, drunk, laughing, nearly incoherent and providing legitimate arguments to those who would call us ugly Americans. That's what happens after a day at a beach or on a snorkel trip with much too much sun and tequila. Fair warning: On excursions in Mexico, guides continuously bring bottle around for another splash of fiery booze to keep the party festive. Each time -- as we crumple into our cabin beds for a long nap, often missing dinner -- we swear “Never again!”
PictureBart and I found a spot of cool water near the ferry to jump in for a swim -- right alongside a fantastic bar.
Well, this time in Cozumel, on Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, I made sure I stayed away from the catamarans and beaches. Instead, my brother Bart and I went on our own little walkabout in the areas between the two main cruise ports -- steering clear of the tequila made for a tamer experience.

Heading from the International Pier to the San Miguel old town area, we made several stops to check out how travelers might have a fun time on their own in Cozumel. Plenty of walking and swimming makes for a simple, cheap and revealing independent excursion.

The main road along the water between the ports offers tons to do. We found shopping in the forms of large market complexes, with stalls featuring handicrafts, jewelry and souvenirs, to the Royal Village Shopping Center, which is home to major brand name stores, right across from the International Pier.

PictureOur little beach was steps from Tio Jose ...
A bunch of neat looking bars and restaurants also dot the road along the stroll. Most spots offer reliable and free Wi-Fi access if you stop in for food or drink. We enjoyed a few beers, of course.

At Tio Jose near the ferry terminal (which runs passengers to Playa del Carmen), we discovered our own little private beach area. The eatery has cheap beers and gives you delicious chips and salsa. We enjoyed an extended stay for a few cold ones and refreshing dips in the nearby water. In fact, nearly all the restaurants on the water side of the roadway offer access for a swim. Many spots also are homes to outfitters who will take you out for a day of snorkeling or scuba diving.

Also, nearby is a stingray encounter facility. We saw a group just heading into the water to get cozy with creatures as we walked past.

Mexico doesn't lack for great beer options. Bart's pick for a cerveza to savor was Pacifico with lime.

Thanks for reading and happy travels.

5 Things We Learned on Our Trip to Cancun

We knew it would be a fun get-together. The sun and sunsets . . . the ocean and sand.
Of course our weeklong getaway in Cancun at the Westin Lagunamar Resort was going to be a great trip.

There were, however, a few things we learned that we might not have anticipated.

1. No matter how enticing that glorious infinity pool looks as its vista stretches from the resort property, past the beach and straight into the Caribbean Sea, do not jump in face first without knowing the depth. That first cool splash will quickly be spoiled by your inevitable face plant! (Right, Ryan?)

2. When it comes to food spices, Mexican "hot" is different than American "hot." After a great dinner, the morning after spent suffering in the bathroom attests, but sometimes that delicious spicy food is just worth it.

Season to taste, but be careful!
3. We know you fancy yourself an avid runner. But even you, Mr. Runner Man, will not be able to simply shed your Reeboks and merrily dash through the sand barefoot every day without consequences. Purply, bruisey consequences.

4. Those ruins sure look high. Trust me, they are! You might think "This ain't so bad" as you scramble nimbly to the top while navigating the well-worn, slippery uneven steps. But, remember, you have to turn around and go back down, too. When I glanced back halfway up the Coba ruin, I'll admit my stomach sank a bit and my breathing started to quicken.

5. You never know what kind of art you're going to find at a funky old beachside hotel that serves up great beer, tacos and smiles. Garrafon de Castilla on Isla Mujeres presents . . . Utensil Jesus!
