Cruise Shipping Miami 2014 is under way, and I'll be here all week with updates on what's new in the world of cruise. The largest cruise industry conference in the world is sure to generate some interesting news and notes, and I'll aim to file daily dispatches detailing all I see and hear Monday through Thursday on the floor of the Miami Beach Convention Center.

This convention marks the 30th anniversary of the giant business-to-business cruise gala.

You can also follow my coverage on Twitter @InTheLoopTravel (#CSM2014) and on Facebook.

Carnival Paradise stopped last week in the Caribbean Sea -- while on its way from Tampa, Fla., to Grand Cayman -- to rescue 24 Cubans who were adrift in a boat, according to a CNN report. The Cuban passengers of the small boat, which had an engine that wasn't running, were brought onboard Paradise and given food, clothes and medical screenings. Carnival reported the rescue to the U.S. Coast Guard and the itinerary wasn't affected, the line says. No word on how long the new passengers were on Paradise. They had been adrift on the broken down boat at sea for five days, the New York Daily News reported.

Norwegian Cruise Line announced last week that it has put together a deal to add Carlo's Bake Shop items to its entire fleet. The sweet treats made famous on the TLC cable TV reality show "Cake Boss" first were made available on Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway. Next up, the goodies will be available on Epic and eventually all the ships in the next few months.

Carnival Cruise Lines is gambling that Isle of Capri casinos patrons will try their luck at a program the companies are collaborating on. Customers at Isle of Capri's regional casinos, in 15 localities in Colorado, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Iowa, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi, will be eligible for free cruises, special rates on cruises and other promotions based on their level of casino play.

Billionaire Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, which is made up of more than 400 companies, including Virgin Atlantic Airways and Virgin Mobile wireless communications, says he plans to launch a cruise line by 2019. According to a story by Cruise Critic, Branson told The National, an Abu Dhabi newspaper that his $1.7 billion project would call for two ships that will be based in Miami and sail seasons in the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

Thanks for reading and happy cruising,
JR
