Viking River Cruise will be christening a slew of longships, with a ceremony Tuesday in Avignon, France. The line welcomes 14 brand new vessels to the fleet, which has been growing at a record-setting pace in the past three years.

American Queen Steamboat Co. is set to launch its American Empress next month. The 223-passenger riverboat will ply the waters of the Columbia and Snake rivers, making it the largest river ship west of the Mississippi. Claudette Waggoner, wife of American Queen CEO John Waggoner, serves as Empress' godmother, and former U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will be the keynote speaker at the christening ceremony April 5 in Portland, Ore. The ship will then set sail on its maiden voyage, a nine-day trip to Clarkston, Wash.

Princess Cruises' Diamond Princess will get a whole batch of new features during its drydock in preparation for its second season sailing in Japan. Added will be an 8,800-square foot Japanese bath area, sushi restaurant (a larger version of Kai Sushi, which is on Sun Princess), additional shopping areas. The bath and garden complex will have indoor and outdoor bathing areas featuring stone and other natural materials. Other changes to take place during the April 2-17 drydock in Singapore: 14 new cabins and a sports court on the roof of the Skywalker's Nightclub.

Also, Princess Cruises boosted the fees for its adults-only Sanctuary area on all its ships to "help control demand." A half day pass increases to $20 from $10, and a full-day pass is $40 instead of $20.

Costa Cruises announced that it was going to have two ships sailing from Miami, a first for the line. The 2,260-passenger Costa Luminosa returns to Miami for its 10-day itineraries, beginning Dec. 20, and the 2,114-passenger Costa Mediterranea comes to Miami for the first time for seven-day sailings, beginning Dec. 12.

Happy travels,
